In September 2024, Digital Bricks celebrated the launch of ‘Keeping Your Cool in School,’ a digital evolution of the popular ‘Cool in School’ programme that was originally created in 2007. Collaborating closely with Fife Council Education staff, Education Scotland, and Scottish Mediation, Digital Bricks played a key role in digitally transforming this resource to meet the needs of today’s classrooms.
Fife Council and Education Scotland asked Digital Bricks to update the original materials into an accessible and interactive online resource. Watch the video below to discover more about our role in redesigning the resource.
The original resource from 2007 was an entirely paper-based collection of storybooks, A4 ring binders and workbooks. It was a much loved programme, but needed a fresh approach to deliver its core lessons in a modern way.
Our first challenge was to take the paper based materials and transform them into a digital format, without losing the quality and style of the original artwork.
The 2024 edition also needed to reflect an expanded understanding of how conflict and relationship dynamics impact children and young people today. The resource needed to address societal changes, including evolving attitudes, values, and beliefs, while embracing the integration of technology.
Digital Bricks worked closely with Fife Council’s Education team, and held a series of design workshops, tapping into their collective expertise to ensure the digital resource would fit their needs while retaining the essence of the original programme.
The resource was rebranded as Keeping Your Cool in School, with a new website and modern identity, which honoured the original resource. The design team worked iteratively with the project’s working group, refining the logo, colour scheme, fonts, and overall aesthetic to ensure it resonated with teachers and pupils.
As the content was transitioned, it was important to focus on user experience for both children and teachers. The new website, learning platform and online content enables teachers to deliver the characters and scenarios in just a few clicks.
The resource was designed to support teachers in nurturing a positive school environment. We developed this short animation to introduce the resource and characters to new users.
Keeping Your Cool in School is now available for anyone to login and start using, ultimately helping primary school children build and sustain positive relationships at school and beyond. The programme empowers children with the life skills and confidence to succeed in school and life.
